If you have been typing "snow removal service near me" into your phone this month, the real question is not who to hire but when. Seasonal providers serving Toronto, Etobicoke, York and North York typically build their winter routes in the fall, and MapleCore's seasonal coverage begins November 15. This guide covers why the booking window is the fall, what changes once the season starts, when to book rather than shovel, and what to have ready for a quote.
Why routes are built in the fall
Residential snow clearing is route work. A crew does not answer calls one at a time; it drives a fixed sequence of nearby properties in a set order. Most providers plan those routes before the first snowfall, when there is time to drive each street and note where snow can be stacked.
The route is also what makes a response window possible. Each stop takes time, so there is a limit to how many properties one crew can reach inside any target window, and a route is generally treated as full once it carries as many stops as the crew can clear in that time. Adding more puts the window at risk for everyone already on it. MapleCore's Basic Snow Removal package, for example, targets completion within 8 hours after qualifying snowfall ends, subject to contract conditions.
That is why availability is limited and, for most providers, largely settled in the fall. A late request usually fits only if there is room near existing stops: an address on a street the route already drives is easier to add than one on the far side of the neighbourhood, which costs the whole route time.
What the November 15 start means, and what happens if you book after it
Seasonal snow contracts run November 15 to April 15. For winter 2026–2027 that is November 15, 2026 to April 15, 2027. Sign before the start date and the contract covers that full period.
If you book after the season has started, two things apply. First, as the FAQ on the seasonal snow contracts page puts it, sign-ups after the season starts are prorated, so the contract covers the portion of the season that remains. Second, coverage for your address is confirmed with the proposal, so the way to find out whether it can still be added is to request a quote.
Per-visit (one-time) requests are possible subject to availability. What a seasonal contract gives you that a one-time request does not is service on every qualifying event from November 15 to April 15, and the time to arrange one is before routes are set.
Signs you should book a snow removal service near me rather than shovel
A short single driveway is one thing. These are the situations where a contract earns its place:
- Early departures. You leave before 7 am. Overnight snow has to be cleared in the dark, and the windrow left by the municipal plow at the driveway entrance often arrives after you have gone, so you come home to a frozen ridge.
- Travel. A week away in January means a week of uncleared driveway and walkway, an obvious signal that nobody is home.
- Long, wide or steep driveways. A double or triple driveway holds a lot of snow, a sloped drive turns packed snow to ice under tires, and a long driveway on a deep lot takes far longer by hand.
- Corner lots and long frontage. Sidewalk along two sides adds a lot of shovelling. Municipal sidewalk frontage is an optional line in the residential scope, and the city publishes its current winter maintenance guidance for property owners.
- Health. Heavy, wet snow is hard lifting. If anyone in the household has been told to avoid it, or should not be out on an icy driveway at 5 am, hire it out.
- Shared or mutual driveways. Two households shovelling to different standards, with nowhere to put the snow, is a recurring argument. One contract and one agreed stacking spot removes most of it.
If two or more of these apply, start comparing residential snow removal services near you, and do it in October rather than after the first storm. That is the difference between choosing a provider and taking whoever has room.
What to have ready before you request a quote
Pricing is quoted per property after the team reviews the request, so a complete request means fewer follow-up questions before the proposal. Gather:
- Postal code. Coverage for a specific address is confirmed with the proposal. Start with the postal-code checker on the homepage.
- Surfaces. Driveway size (single, double or triple car), the apron, the walkway to the front door, any side walkways or steps, and whether you want municipal sidewalk frontage included. The windrow at the driveway entrance is part of the standard residential snow clearing scope.
- Photos. One from the street showing the driveway mouth and where snow can be stacked, one from the front door along the walkway, and one of anything unusual: a slope, a retaining wall, interlock, gravel or a gate.
- Trigger preference. Basic Snow Removal begins at 5 cm of accumulated snowfall. Deluxe Snow & Ice Removal carries a zero-centimetre advertised snowfall trigger, subject to a clearly defined service policy. Lower triggers than 5 cm are available at a higher seasonal rate. Basic vs. Deluxe covers which suits which property.
- Salting. Salting is quoted as a separate line unless the package includes it (Deluxe includes it, Basic does not). Decide whether you want salt on the walkway, the driveway or both.
- Access notes. Cars that stay on the driveway overnight, a mutual drive, or a shared stacking spot.
The snow removal quote checklist covers the same ground in a printable format.
How the free quote and proposal work
A quote request is free and creates no obligation. You submit the details above through the winter quote form, the team reviews them, and you receive a written proposal.
The proposal should list the scope by surface, the trigger, the response window, salting as its own line if it is not included, and the billing schedule. MapleCore invoices seasonal contracts in monthly instalments, and for winter 2026–2027 the written proposal includes 10% off the seasonal contract. If anything you asked for is missing, ask before you sign.
Once you accept, the contract is in place and each clearing is logged with a time stamp. Questions go to 647-809-7884 or info@maplecorelawncare.com, Monday to Saturday, 7:00 am to 7:00 pm.
October to December: a booking timeline
- Early to mid-October. Most providers are building routes now. Walk your property, take the photos, decide on trigger and salting, and request a quote.
- Late October. Proposals come back and get signed. Compare scope line by line before looking at the number. The Etobicoke homeowner's guide has a question list that works on any provider.
- Early November. Finish the fall cleanup so leaves are not frozen into the walkway, mark driveway edges and beds with stakes, and move anything that lives on the driveway.
- November 15. Seasonal coverage begins.
- Late November and December. Sign-ups after the start are prorated, and coverage for your address is confirmed with the proposal. Per-visit requests remain possible subject to availability.
