You have a few weekends between now and the first snow that stays, and a yard that needs more than a rake. You might do the work yourself, or you might be typing fall clean up near me into a search bar. Either way the order of operations is the same. This checklist walks an Etobicoke or Mississauga lot in that order, then covers when to hire and how to pair a cleanup with a seasonal snow contract.
Leaf removal in stages as the trees drop
Leaves do not fall on one day, so do not plan one cleanup day. Some maples are bare by mid-October, while oaks and the larger maples on older streets hold on into November. Plan on three passes:
- Early to mid-October. Get leaves off the lawn before they mat. A thin, dry layer can be mulch-mowed in; a wet layer comes off.
- Late October to early November. The heavy pass on most lots. Rake or blow onto tarps, then bag or stage for collection.
- After the last trees drop. Lawn, beds and every hard surface. Anything left now sits under snow until April.
With several mature trees, a leaf removal service that returns for the later passes beats one big visit, so ask whether a second pass is in the quote.
The final mow at winter height
Keep mowing as long as the grass grows, usually into early or mid-November in the GTA. For the last cut, bring the height down a little from the summer setting, to roughly 5 to 6 cm, taking no more than a third of the blade at a time. Grass left long mats under snow and invites snow mould; grass scalped short goes into winter stressed.
Cut back perennials and clear the beds
Decide bed by bed. Cut spent perennials such as hostas, daylilies and peonies to a few centimetres once they have browned, and send peony foliage out with the yard waste rather than into the compost, since it can carry disease over winter. Leave seed heads and sturdy stems (coneflower, sedum, ornamental grasses) for winter structure.
Pull annuals and the last weeds, empty containers that would crack full of wet soil, and top up mulch on bare soil.
Gutters, downspouts and the ground-level checks
You do not need a ladder to learn most of what matters. After a rain, look for water sheeting over the edge of an eavestrough, streaks on brick below a seam, and downspouts that overflow at the top elbow. Each points to a blocked section to clear once most leaves are down.
Then look at where every downspout ends. One that drains onto a walkway or driveway needs an extension that sends water onto the lawn, because that outflow becomes a sheet of ice after every thaw. The Basic versus Deluxe comparison explains how ice is handled under each snow package.
Hard surfaces, drains and edges
Blow or sweep leaves off the driveway, walkways, steps, patio and the apron at the street. Wet leaves are slick, and leaves left under the first snow freeze into a layer that neither a shovel nor a plow blade lifts cleanly.
Then the small items: brush leaf litter out of interlock joints and top up joint sand where it has washed out. Clear any area drain at the low point of a driveway, garage apron or basement walkout, because a blocked drain backs up during every thaw. Scoop out the window wells.
Get the property ready for snow service
Whoever clears the snow needs to know where the edges are once everything is white. Do this now:
- Driveway markers. Reflective stakes at the driveway corners and apron, wherever lawn meets pavement without a curb, and at the corners of interlock and retaining walls.
- Sprinkler heads. Have the irrigation system blown out before a hard freeze, then mark any heads within a metre of the driveway or walkway.
- Hose bibs and outdoor taps. Disconnect, drain and store hoses. If the tap is not frost-free, close the interior shut-off and leave the outdoor tap open.
- Where the bins live. Pick a spot for garbage, recycling and green bins out of the path the snow will take. A bin at the edge of the apron is the first thing a windrow buries.
- Movable obstacles. Basketball nets, planters, low landscape lights and decorative edging come off the driveway and walkway or get marked.
- Where the snow will go. Clear a stacking area, usually lawn beside the driveway. On a mutual driveway in Mimico or New Toronto, agree this with the neighbour first. On a corner lot in Erin Mills or Meadowvale, a long sidewalk frontage needs its own room.
If you are hiring, this walk-around tells you what to ask for. MapleCore's residential scope is the driveway and apron, the walkway to the front door and the windrow left by the municipal plow at the driveway entrance; municipal sidewalk frontage and salting are optional lines. Where the leaves go
Three options, in order of effort:
- Leave some. Leaves raked onto beds or under hedges break down into mulch and shelter overwintering insects.
- Mulch-mow. Fine shreds disappear into the turf within weeks.
- Set out for collection. Toronto and Peel Region each run seasonal yard waste collection with their own set-out requirements. Our fall cleanup and yard waste checklist links to the right pages for both.
If collection has ended by the time your last trees drop, ask the yard clean up services you are comparing whether the quote includes hauling material away or only staging it at the curb.
When to do it yourself and when to search for fall clean up near me
One small tree on a standard lot is a Saturday with a rake and a mulching mower. The decision gets harder as these stack up:
| Factor | Do it yourself | Worth hiring |
|---|---|---|
| Trees | One or two small trees | Several mature trees, or a neighbour's canopy over the yard |
| Lot | Standard lot, open access to the back | Corner lot, long frontage, rear yard through a narrow gate |
| Surfaces | Short drive, plain walkway | Long interlock walkways, wide driveway and apron, patio |
| Time | Free weekends through November | Travelling, a second property or a rental you do not live at |
Hire a fall cleanup when two or more items in the right-hand column apply, and especially when timing is tight: a late, heavy leaf drop followed by an early snow leaves lawns matted until spring. Ask for an itemized scope so you compare quotes on the same work.
Bundling a fall cleanup with a seasonal snow contract
The cleanup is the last time anyone sees the edges of your property until spring. With one provider for both, the notes from the cleanup (where the interlock ends, where the drains are, where the bins live) carry straight into the snow scope.
MapleCore offers fall cleanup and leaf removal through November and seasonal snow contracts from November 15 to April 15. Pricing is quoted per property after the team reviews the request, contracts are invoiced in monthly instalments, and seasonal contract requests for winter 2026–2027 include the advertised 10% discount in the proposal. Request a free winter quote and note that you also want a fall cleanup.
