If you are arranging driveway snow clearing in Mississauga this winter, the useful questions are about the visit itself: which surfaces get cleared, when to expect the crew, what to do before they arrive and where the snow ends up. This article covers a residential visit at that level. If you are still comparing companies, the vetting questions are in our guide to residential snow removal in Mississauga.

What driveway snow clearing in Mississauga covers

A residential visit is defined by surfaces, and the proposal should name each one. MapleCore's residential snow removal scope covers:

  • The driveway and apron. The apron is the strip between the sidewalk or property line and the curb, usually where slush collects.
  • The windrow at the entrance. The ridge the municipal plow leaves across the mouth of the driveway; clearing it is part of the scope, not an extra.
  • The walkway to the front door.
  • Municipal sidewalk frontage, optional. Two sides on a corner lot; included only if you ask.
  • Salting, optional. Quoted as a separate line unless the package includes it.

Each clearing is logged with a time stamp. Anything else, such as a side door or the path to a shed, should be requested so the proposal can list it.

How the trigger and the service window play out in a long storm

Two numbers matter: the trigger, the accumulated depth that starts a qualifying event, and the service window, the target time to finish once that snowfall ends.

On MapleCore's Basic Snow Removal, service begins at 5 cm of accumulated snowfall, with target completion within 8 hours after qualifying snowfall ends, subject to contract conditions. Deluxe Snow & Ice Removal carries a zero-centimetre advertised snowfall trigger, subject to a clearly defined service policy.

The confusing case is a long storm. Picture snow starting at noon and ending at 6 am:

  • The trigger is passed in the afternoon, so the event qualifies.
  • The service window starts at 6 am, when the qualifying snowfall ends, not at noon.
  • Large storms may require return visits; the final clearing comes after the snow stops.
  • The municipal plow may come through afterwards and leave a fresh windrow; ask how that case is handled before you sign.

What to do before the crew arrives

The crew works faster and closer to the edges when the driveway is ready.

  1. Park so the crew can work. A vehicle in the middle of a double driveway blocks most of it. Use the garage or park tight to one side.
  2. Set driveway markers. Reflective stakes at the corners, the apron and any curve show the operator where the pavement ends. Set them before the ground freezes.
  3. Keep bins off the driveway. On collection day, put bins at the edge and bring them in promptly; a buried bin is an obstacle the operator may not see.
  4. Flag anything that can be damaged. Sprinkler heads near the edge, low landscape lighting, a raised interlock border, the lip of a catch basin. Mention them when the proposal is prepared, and mark them.

Asphalt, interlock, concrete and gravel: why surfaces are cleared differently

Each surface changes how a crew works, so tell your provider which one you have.

SurfaceHow it is clearedWhat to tell the crew
AsphaltBlade or shovel on the surface; the most forgivingCracks, heaves and patches that catch an edge
InterlockRubber or polyurethane edge, blower or shovel, to avoid lifting paversRaised pavers, border stones, fresh joint sand
ConcreteCleared like asphalt; de-icing product chosen with careAge of the slab, expansion joints, any sealer
GravelBlade lifted or shoes set high; a thin packed layer is leftGravel depth, edges, where it meets the lawn

A blade set too low on interlock catches a raised paver; on gravel the goal is a firm packed layer, because scraping to bare stone pulls gravel into the lawn.

Sloped and shaded driveways and refreeze

A cleared driveway is not finished if it glazes over by morning, and the GTA sees thaw-refreeze cycles and freezing rain most winters. Sloped driveways send meltwater downhill by day; it pools at the apron or the garage door and freezes overnight. Shaded driveways, north-facing or under a mature tree, hold ice after the neighbours' pavement is dry.

Clearing handles accumulation; salting handles the surface afterwards. Basic Snow Removal is snow removal only (salting not included), so on Basic the ice is yours to manage unless salting is quoted as a separate line. Deluxe Snow & Ice Removal includes snow clearing and salting, with coverage for snow, freezing rain, ice and light snowfall events, subject to contract terms, plus proactive winter monitoring.

Where the snow goes

Where the snow goes should be agreed before the first storm. A professional crew stacks snow on your own property, usually on the lawn along the driveway edge, not onto the roadway, across the sidewalk or onto a neighbour's lot. The City of Mississauga also publishes the city's current winter maintenance guidance for property owners.

Think about where a season's worth will fit. A single driveway with lawn on both sides has room; a double driveway running wall to wall between two houses has very little, and by February the banks at the end can block your view when backing out. Keep the stacking spot clear of the hydrant, the mailbox and the sightline to the street.

Plowing, blowing or shovelling: which suits a driveway

Snow plowing usually means a truck- or tractor-mounted blade, the fastest method on an open, straight asphalt driveway. A blade pushes snow ahead of it, so it leaves a pile at the end of the run and is a poorer fit for short driveways with a car on them, interlock with raised edges and gravel.

A snowblower is slower but throws snow to the side, spreading it across the lawn instead of building one pile, which helps on long narrow driveways, gravel and lots with no stacking room.

A shovel crew handles what machines cannot: steps, the walkway, the strip along the garage door, around a parked car and the edge of interlock. Many visits pair a machine for the open surface with a shovel for the detail; the full glossary is in snow removal vs. snow plowing.

Whichever combination your driveway needs, get it written into the proposal. MapleCore builds its routes around the west and central GTA; the Mississauga snow removal page has area detail, and coverage for your address is confirmed with the proposal. Seasonal contracts run November 15 to April 15, are invoiced in monthly instalments, and winter 2026–2027 seasonal proposals include 10% off.
